El sargento neozelandés John Daniel ("Jack") Hinton tenía serios problemas de indisciplina con los altos mandos pero lo compensaba con grandes dosis de valor. Durante la retirada aliada de Grecia en 1941 se presentó en el cuartel general del brigadier general Leonard Parrington y le acusó de cobardía, después organizó un contraataque con una docena de compañeros destruyendo y apoderándose de piezas artilleras y nidos de ametralladoras alemanas.
Terminó herido y capturado por los germanos, mientras estaba castigado por uno de sus numerosos intentos de fuga, el comandante del campo Stalag IX-C le homenajeó cuando se enteró de que le habían concedido la Cruz Victoria

"On the night of 28th–29th April, 1941, during the fighting in Greece, a column of German armoured forces entered Kalamata; this column, which contained several armoured cars, 2" guns, and 3" mortars, and two 6" guns, rapidly converged on a large force of British and New Zealand troops awaiting embarkation on the beach. When the order to retreat to cover was given, Serjeant Hinton, shouting "to Hell with this, who'll come with me," ran to within several yards of the nearest gun; the gun fired, missing him, and he hurled two grenades which completely wiped out the crew. He then came on with the bayonet followed by a crowd of New Zealanders. German troops abandoned the first 6" gun and retreated into two houses. Serjeant Hinton smashed the window and then the door of the first house and dealt with the garrison with the bayonet. He repeated the performance in the second house and as a result, until overwhelming German forces arrived, the New Zealanders held the guns"
La historia de cómo 4 rangers lograron tomar la bateria alemana Lochrist en Brest y casi 800 prisioneros en septiembre 1944. Un pequeño grupo explorador dirigido por Robert Thomas Edlin habia capturado a 20 alemanes en una de las posiciones fortificadas y Edlin quiso ver si podian avanzar más por el interior usando a los capturados, lograron llegar hasta el puesto del comandante y se atrincheraron. Amenazando al oficial con sus armas y una granada consiguieron que por megafonia diera la orden de rendición general! Edlin fue condecorado con la Distinguished Service Cross
