El "Fort Douaumont" es una fortificacion construida por los franceses a partir del 1885, y reforzado hasta el 1913. Esta situado sobre una de las elevaciones mas altas de la zona y ocupa una superficie de 30.000 metros, esta protegido, en el lado dirigido al enemigo, por una gran zona de trincheras, alambre de espino, y postaciones de ametralladoras y rodeado por un foso profundo 6 metros.

El armamento consistia en un cañon de 155mm y 2 cañones de 75mm, ademas de otros cañones y numerosas torretas para ametralladoras.

Puede ser considerada como una pequeña Linea Maginot, ya que fue considerada, a su tiempo, al igual que la Linea Maginot, como la obra de defensa mas fuerte de Europa y prácticamente inexpugnable.
